Now let’s get to this review.
My DreamHost Review: Everything You Need To Know Before You Start
In the first part of my review, I will be comparing their shared hosting plans.
The purpose is to evaluate whether you’ll be getting good value for your money.
Let’s get started.
1. DreamHost Shared Hosting Plans Pricing Reviewed
Although DreamHost does offer other types of hosting like VPS, dedicated, and cloud hosting I still recommend you to start with the shared hosting if you are a beginner.
DreamHost offers 2 different hosting packages for shared hosting.
DreamHost WordPress Started Tier Plan vs WordPress Unlimited Plan
With the cheapest plan, you are limited to just 1 website however, on the higher one, you can have unlimited websites.
With the WordPress started plan you get only 50 GB of storage but it upgrades to Unlimited space once you choose the next plan.
Another worthy feature, which DreamHost provides on all their plans free automated daily backups and free domain privacy.
In case you don’t know automatic daily backups is a feature that saves all your website content once a day so you can safely restore it if something wrong happens. That way you won’t lose your data and files.
It’s important to know that the majority of hosting providers don’t give you those 2 features at no cost.
Instead, they try to upsell but DreamHost is very good and gives it away upfront for free.
But choosing between their 2 hosting plans is overall a simple process.
If you only want to have only 1 website pick the WordPress Starter plan. (click here to check it out)
If you want to own more than 1 website and need more space go for the WordPress Unlimited plan. (click here to learn more about it)
2. DreamHost Domain Name Service Reviewed – Is it worth it?
In terms of the domain name costs, you know, from all my other articles, I’m very strong on not purchasing your domain names from any hosting providers because they can cost up to 2 or 3 times more than buying it from a domain name provider like namecheap.com, which I do myself.
But for a .com domain, DreamHost is actually cheaper than most of the specialized domain providers.
The cost of a .com domain is $6.99 for the first year. (click here to check it out)
This is actually cheaper than getting it from namecheap.com, which I do.
However, the second year is $15.99, which is a little bit more so in the end, it works out roughly about the same.
Should you buy a domain name from DreamHost?
If you think you are going to go with DreamHost and stick with them for the long-term then by all means buy a domain name with them.
You also get a free domain name privacy, just like you do with namecheap.com.
So there’s nothing wrong with getting your domain name with DreamHost at all.
Taking this route is definitely the simplest option.
For me personally, I’d still go with Namecheap but it’s entirely up to you.

DreamHost Live Demo – How to select and purchase a plan
I would choose their unlimited plan for this tutorial to test them out
So because of that, I’m going to select, that I already have a domain.
Now DreamHost has 3 different payment plans: monthly, yearly, and 3-year plans.
This is another refreshing thing in the hosting industry, where they always want to make you buy 3 years as it’s normally cheaper, but DreamHost is charging you the same price for the 1 year and the 3-year plan.
Which is another positive thing worth mentioning.
So for this tutorial, I’m just going to choose the 1-year plan.
After you’ve filled in everything, you are going to come down to the additional options.
I do not suggest you buy the dream shield protection as there are free plugins that you can use to replace this option.
And $3 per month is fairly expensive. That’s $36/year.
So untick that and once you’re happy with everything just click on submit order.
Is DreamHost pricing too expensive? – The Results
Based on pricing, I’d give DreamHost an overall rating of 9 out of 10.
You can get started for as little as $2.59 a month with them, and they provide you with everything you need to begin.
You even get free automatic backups with their cheapest plan which is something very rare to see.
This is one of the more important features to me because many other hosting providers don’t give this to you on the cheapest plan.
They try to upsell you instead so well down on DreamHost here.
I did take one point off them as they don’t offer a custom caching plugin similar to other hosting providers like A2 hosting or SiteGround.
These features will help your website load faster, but DreamHost currently doesn’t offer it.
However, the issue would not matter if their overall speed is still pretty high, but that can only be found out by testing it.
And this is exactly what I’ll do right now so keep reading till the end.
I will now proceed to look at the user experience and interface issues.
3. DreamHost After Purchase Setup & Ease Of Use
I was very impressed right away with how easy it was to navigate.
Their interface has a lot of custom features that are not available in Cpanel offered by so many other hosting providers.
This design is quite simple and very easy to use.
Now let’s go through the process of using DreamHost to install WordPress.
How to Install WordPress on DreamHost Test (Step by Step Guide)
Click on ”add and manage hosting”.
Click on add hosting to domain type in my website and click on fully host this domain.
And that’s it.
My website has been added now the next step is to actually install WordPress.
So I’m going to go to domain, click on website.
You can see my site is here now so I’m going to click on manage.
And I’m going to just install the normal one.
And that’s it.
As you see, WordPress is very easy to set up.
I love the fact that I can try and upsell you on anything while you’re trying to install your site or create new emails.
Now let’s do a couple more things.
Let’s see how easy it is to install the SSL certificate and create an email account with DreamHost.
How to Install an SSL Certificate and Get and Email Address from DreamHost (Step by Step Guide)
So go to SSL/TLC certificates and click on add.
Select the free certificate and click the button.
There you have it.
The next step is to creat the email.
So you got to mail pick on manage email, click, create a new email address.
Next, choose the name and type your password and click create address.
And that’s it once again.
So all these 3 things just look very simple, but now let’s confirm and see if everything worked properly.
So I just opened my website and as you can see here.
My bare-bones website is working and the SSL certificate is being applied successfully.
So that was really clean and easy to do.
Is DreamHost Easy to Setup and Use? – The Results
I love the fact that DreamHost didn’t try to upsell me in any step of that process like some other hosting providers do.
In conclusion, I rate DreamHost as a 10 out of 10 for ease of setup and ease of use.
I have no issues with them in this area.
It’s super easy to use and navigate your new site and I think all users, especially beginners, would love it.
4. DreamHost’s Speed Performance Tests
So after installing the WordPress site, I ran GTmetrix on the bare-bones page to test its speed.
The result is 1.3 seconds.
It was a fantastic start, even though they weren’t the fastest provider in my test, but I must say they were close.
In order to make the test more realistic, I will need to increase the size of the page.
You should get step-by-step instructions when you sign up for DreamHost.
First, I am going to install a better theme, and install a few plugins to get the website up and running faster.
Optimize the speed with WP’s fastest cache:
As well as ShortPixel, which optimizes images:
Finally, I will install the free Cloudflare app, which also increases website performance since it uses their CDN.
My goal is to make my test website similar to what you would install in real life.
The speed is now 2.6 seconds.
Which is once again, not the fastest compared to the best performing hosting providers like SiteGround.
But it’s still more than acceptable speed and they passed the Google recommended site load speed of 3 seconds.
If I dig deeply and fixed a couple of more things I could be able to drop that speed to 1.5-2 seconds.
5. DreamHost Uptime Performance Test
I also monitored DreamHost stability for the last 30 days through Uptime robot, and their uptime rate was 100%.
This means that they reach their lofty standards as they promise their user a 100% uptime guarantee on their website.
In addition, after I looked closer I saw that Dreamhost didn’t have any downtime for the past 2 months which is impressive.
How fast and reliable is DreamHost? – The Results
Even if not perfect I would rate DreamHost’s speed and uptime performance, an 8 out of 10.
I took two points away for their speed as it was a fair bit slower than the fastest hosting providers, but their uptime however is great.
Are you happy with the current results? In case you are feel free to click here and see their current best price.
6. DreamHost Customer Support Review and Test
You will be happy to know that DreamHost provides 24/7 support through email and a live chat.
Sadly it’s good to know that their live chat is only accesible to current customers.
In order to test their response time and knowledge, I would ask them these 3 simple questions on live chat.
Question 1. I think my website is infected with a virus. Can you please do something and help?
Question 2. Can you give me some information about your domain name price and renewal cost?
Question 3. Would you mind helping me install my SSL certificate and set up Cloudflare because I’m new to this?
Here are the results.
For the first question, they were willing to help, but they had to forward me from the live chat support to email.
He did tell me he was going to cost money to fix the issue, but if it wasn’t a big one, they were willing to do me a favor and help me fix it for free one time.
Despite the fact that it took them a while to solve my problem, they gave me the support I needed.
For the second question, I was a little bit disappointed because I asked them as a new customer and if you’re not an existing customer, they don’t have live chat for you.
So what I had to do was email them the question, but on the positive, that only took 15 minutes to answer my question and they gave me the full answer.
So the answer was very satisfactory but not having a live chat was a bit disappointing.
DreamHost’s support responded fast but didn’t want to do all the installations for me.
Instead, I had to follow their instructions and do it myself.
So overall, this was okay as they still helped guide me and were very friendly, but they just didn’t do it for me, when I asked.
Is the customer service for DreamHost good? – The Results
With regards to their response time, they solved my issues within 15, 7, and 2 minutes.
Based on the three times, the average wait time was 8 minutes.
And 8 minutes if above the industry standard of 5 minutes.
After all my tests were done I would have to score DreamHost support a 6 out of 10.
I would say their support was average.
The response time wasn’t really good and they were lacking some knowledge and made me do some of the installations on my own.
Then there was the issue of lacking 24/7 live chat support for new customers attempting to sign up for their services.
So I wasn’t really happy with that part.
But let’s now see what I like and don’t like about DreamHost.
7. DreamHost Pros & Cons: What I Like and Don’t Like About Them
Let’s begin with the bad stuff.
DreamHost Cons: What I don’t like about them
DreamHost has only 2 server locations which are both located in the United States.
Therefore, DreamHost probably would not be the best choice for anyone whose main traffic sources come from outside North America.
A good alternative to this is SiteGround because they offer 6 different locations around the globe. (click here to learn more about them)
The second point is their support staff technical knowledge was lacking and we’re not able to provide the level of service I needed fast.
Their live chat support is also not available for new customers.
DreamHost Pros: What I do like about them
The first positive thing that stands out to me is DreamHost’s speed and performance.
Its website is fast compared to the price you pay for the service.
I would say they’re a very reliable hosting provider and one you can trust.
Secondly, their backend system is very user friendly, much less daunting than using Cpanel.
I don’t have anything against Cpanel but I don’t find it very user-friendly for somebody who is just starting out.
The next unique feature of DreamHost is their 97-day money-back guarantee. (click here to check it out)
As a matter of fact that is actually 3 times longer than most of their competitors.
And lastly I really like their pricing.
They are really transparent and I really try to upsell you anywhere.
And let’s not forget the fact that DreamHost offers one of the cheapest shared hosting prices starting from only $2.59 per month.
My DreamHost Honest Opinion – Should you buy it?
After everything I said I’ve decided to give DreamHost, a final score of 8 out of 10.
Their interface is very straightforward and they offer fast and reliable hosting service.
So here’s what I recommend:
The DreamHost hosting service is an excellent choice for beginners seeking a reliable host and an easy-to-use interface.
They have good speed, great uptime, very easy to use interface and average support.
But for a hosting under $3/month, this is a really good deal so I would recommend them for anyone who has a limited budget and wants the best value money can buy.
However, if you’re more advanced and they’re looking for more features and better performance or want better support, then I don’t think DreamHost is the one for you.
If that’s the case, I highly recommend you to check SiteGround.
